Many people think lubricating oil is merely refined base oil. What they fail to recognize is that base oil acts only as a carrier, while additives constitute the core soul of lubrication protection. Rooted in the lubrication sector for commercial vehicles, construction machinery and industrial equipment, AISO Lubricants Group leverages its in-house formula system to scientifically combine four core additives — detergents, dispersants, anti-wear agents and antioxidants — forming a complete and long-lasting lubrication protection closed loop. Today we reveal the underlying logic and value of these four additives.

Detergent: Neutralize Acids at High Temperatures, Scour Carbon Deposits and Maintain Cleanliness of Components

Under high-temperature working conditions of engines and gearboxes, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides are generated from fuel combustion, while organic acids form simultaneously due to oil oxidation. These acidic substances corrode metal surfaces including pistons, cylinder liners and valves. At high temperatures, colloids and carbon deposits easily adhere to piston rings and piston crowns, resulting in ring seizure, compromised sealing, power loss and higher fuel consumption.

Detergents feature alkaline reserve with two core capabilities: neutralizing acidic products and surface cleaning. On one hand, they continuously neutralize inorganic acids from combustion and organic acids produced by oil oxidation to suppress acid corrosion. On the other hand, their surface activity strips varnish and hard carbon deposits attached to metal surfaces and prevents sediments from scaling firmly.

Formulated for high-temperature zones in AISO heavy-duty diesel engine oils and industrial gear oils, detergents are optimized for long oil drain intervals, Euro VI aftertreatment systems and frequent heavy-load scenarios. They keep piston and valve surfaces clean and ensure stable sealing of power components.

In short: Detergents focus on removing scale at high temperatures and neutralizing acid corrosion, responsible for “wiping off dirt that has stuck to parts”.

Dispersant: Suspend Contaminants, Prevent Agglomeration and Avoid Sludge Blockage at Low Temperatures

Fine particles such as soot from combustion, metallic wear debris and oxidized colloids will clump into sludge and sediment if left unchecked, blocking oil passages, filters and oil circuits, which leads to insufficient oil supply and localized lubrication failure.

Most dispersants are ashless macromolecular structures. With one end oil-loving and the other adsorbing contaminant particles, they act as countless tiny "grippers" to stably suspend soot, debris and oxidation by-products in the lubricant. Contaminants circulate evenly with the oil flow instead of settling and forming deposits. They excel at sludge control under medium and low-temperature conditions and work with detergents to deliver full-temperature cleaning performance.

In scenarios with high soot generation, such as diesel engines equipped with EGR, frequent start-stop for short trips and intermittent operation of construction machinery, the carrying capacity of dispersants directly determines whether the oil thickens rapidly. AISO formula system matches dispersant dosage according to oil grades to restrain soot accumulation, delay oil thickening and keep oil passages unobstructed.

In short: Dispersants focus on suspending particles and preventing sludge sedimentation, responsible for “keeping dirt suspended in oil so it will not clump up or block oil circuits”.

Anti-Wear Agent: Boundary Lubrication, Form Protective Films and Resist Friction Impact

In ideal conditions, moving metal surfaces are separated by a continuous oil film to achieve hydrodynamic lubrication. However, during cold start, heavy-load impact, rapid acceleration or low-speed heavy-load operation, the oil film is prone to rupture and the system enters boundary lubrication. Metal surfaces come into close contact, which may cause scuffing, wear and seizure.

Anti-wear agents are sacrificial protective components. Triggered by friction pressure and heat, they undergo tribochemical reactions with metal surfaces and form dense, smooth solid protective films with low shear strength on friction interfaces. The films separate mating metal surfaces, buffer impact, reduce friction and prevent direct metal seizure and wear.

Common components including ZDDP, sulfur-phosphorus compounds, boron-based and molybdenum-based anti-wear additives serve as key parts of AISO “Steel Armor” protection technology, meeting anti-wear and extreme-pressure requirements for engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems and gear equipment with differentiated demands.

It should be noted that more anti-wear agent does not equal better performance. Excessive dosage may lead to ash accumulation, corrosion and incompatibility risks for aftertreatment devices. AISO formulation team carries out precise balancing to reconcile anti-wear performance, catalyst compatibility and long-term stability.

In short: Anti-wear agents deliver boundary lubrication film formation. When the oil film fails, they put a wear-resistant protective coating on metal surfaces.

Antioxidant: Interrupt Oxidation Chain Reactions and Slow Oil Degradation

Lubricating oil is essentially hydrocarbon compounds. Exposed to high temperatures, oxygen and catalytic metal surfaces over time, it initiates oxidation chain reactions. Peroxides form first and gradually turn into organic acids, colloids and asphaltenes, manifested by darkening oil color, rising viscosity, soaring acid number, rapid sludge generation and premature oil failure.

Antioxidants are sacrificial additives that block oxidation via two pathways: capturing free radicals to break oxidation chain reactions, and decomposing unstable peroxides to stop oxidation propagation. Metals can accelerate oxidation catalysis, and antioxidants work with metal passivation mechanisms to weaken the catalytic effect of copper, iron and other metal ions.

Oxidation rate rises exponentially with temperature. Hence, oxidation resistance directly determines oil service life. AISO long-life lubricant portfolio adopts compound primary and secondary antioxidant packages to enhance high-temperature thermal stability, suitable for long-haul fleets and continuously operating industrial units. It slows oil degradation, extends maintenance intervals and cuts customers’ operation and maintenance costs.

In short: Antioxidants slow down oil deterioration, restraining oxidation, thickening and acidification of lubricant from the source.

Synergy of Four Additives: Far More Than Simple Blending, It Is Systematic Balancing

Each type of additive has defined functions, yet the biggest challenge of lubricant formulation lies in the antagonism and synergy among components. Detergents handle high-temperature scale removal and acid neutralization, while dispersants suspend soot and sludge. Together they realize full-condition cleaning across high and low temperatures. Antioxidants stabilize base oil and reduce colloid generation, lowering the cleaning burden for detergents and dispersants. Anti-wear agents safeguard friction pairs and cut wear debris, reducing contaminant load.

AISO Lubricants Group designs formulations oriented to actual working conditions. For passenger cars, heavy-duty diesel trucks, construction machinery, industrial gears, hydraulic systems and special equipment, we adjust the type, dosage and compounding scheme of the four additives. Complying with industry specifications such as API and ACEA, we balance detergency, anti-wear protection, oxidation stability and aftertreatment compatibility. We avoid overemphasis on single performance and develop stable, long-lasting lubrication solutions.

Base oil sets the fundamental property of lubricant, while the additive system defines its protection limit. Understanding detergents, dispersants, anti-wear agents and antioxidants helps us grasp the real protection logic of lubricants. Rooted in scientific additive formulations, AISO Lubricants keeps delivering reliable lubrication power for auto parts dealers, fleets and mining & industrial clients nationwide.

Summary

Detergents, dispersants, anti-wear agents and antioxidants perform their respective roles and complement one another, jointly building an all-round protection system for lubricating oil. Detergents control high-temperature carbon deposits and acid corrosion; dispersants prevent sludge sedimentation and blockage; anti-wear agents guarantee boundary friction protection; antioxidants extend oil service life. A superior lubricant formula never pursues extreme performance of a single property, but achieves delicate balance among all additives. Based on practical operating demands, AISO Lubricants Group continuously optimizes additive compounding technology.
